Have you wondered how you can maintain a connection to nature during these times of self-isolation? Join SSU Osborn Preserve Naturalist Sage Harmon as he demonstrates pine needle coil weaving, a way to connect with and utilize natural materials. As you learn to weave, Sage will also share his experiences as an SSU student and an SSU naturalist. Please bring your curiosity, questions and pine needles! Logistics
No previous experience or knowledge is required. This event is recommended for ages 8 and up, though those under 13 will likely require assistance.
Before the event please collect:
- Natural materials like brown pine needles or stiff, tough grasses. Fibers should be at least seven inches long. If possible, please soak them briefly -- they should be bendable and damp when we start. It's also possible to use intact, green, flexible plant material that will dry after weaving. If no plant material is available you can use thin plastic bags, or you can combine the two.
- Some sort of thread like sewing thread, yarn, rafia, or twine AND a needle for this size of thread. If you don't have a needle, bring a paperclip that can be bent to function as one
- A plastic straw that can be cut to approximately 1 inch long. If you don't have a straw, a piece of cardstock or paper can be rolled into a tight tube then taped in place.
Zoom meeting details will be sent to you upon registration. If you have not used Zoom before, please allow time to download and install the application before the event. Please log-in a few minutes early, as it may take more than one attempt if servers are busy.
