Learn all about the strange and fascinating lives of dragonflies with naturalist and self-described dragonfly-geek, Kevin Munroe. We’ll look at lots of close-up photos, talk about their bizarre behavior and impressive adaptations and most importantly, learn how to find and ID them! We’ll end with tips on attracting and studying them in your neighborhood, including some fun citizen science interactive apps and websites like Odonata Central and Dragonfly ID. Kevin Munroe, Long Island Preserve Director, Nature Conservancy. Before moving to New York last fall, Kevin worked as a Land Management Specialist with the Center and led several popular public events on Orthopterans like grasshoppers and crickets, animals out after dark, and a spring bird-a-thon. Kevin is a self-described Nature Geek, with a special interest in birds, dragonflies, backyard habitat and managing land for biodiversity.
Logistics
No previous experience or knowledge is required. This event is recommended for ages 10 and up, and families are invited to participate.
Please download the Dragonfly ID phone app and visit OdonataCentral.org before the event if possible. Also be on the look out for any aquarium nets and kitchen strainers or sieves around your home that could be used as nets to catch nymphs, especially if they have handles (no shopping necessary -- these items are just suggested).
