As part of the "Fire Up" collaborative, this public results meeting presents the findings of two faculty-student team research projects on regional wildfire resilience issues. Last year, we held a film screening of the inspiring new documentary “Embers of Awakening: From Firestorms to Climate Health” as backdrop for a community discussion on the question: What does resilience to wildfire look like? A steering committee comprised of community thought leaders and wildfire experts then honed in on local issues related to fire, resilience, and community action that could be researched by faculty-student teams. Join us now to hear about outcomes of these research projects, ask questions, and provide input on how these results can be used to take action in our community, with the goal of finding new solutions.

Presenters

SSU faculty-student research teams:

  • Daniel Soto, Department of Geography, Environment & Planning: What are the barriers to Fire Resilience in Underserved Communities?
  • Roxanne Ezett, Department of Sociology: Effective Wildland Fuel Treatments on Private Lands: A Case Study of the Upper Mark West Watershed

The Fire Up Collaborative is a pan-sector collaboration focused on addressing Sonoma County’s pressing challenges in fire resilience. The Fire Up Collaborative hosts public symposia to increase understanding of critical fire issues, convenes roundtables of stakeholders across all sectors of society to identify regional needs, and develops interdisciplinary research teams to undertake critical research needed by decision-makers to take effective action. Fire Up Steering Committee members include Sonoma State University, Sonoma Water, Pepperwood Foundation, Regional Climate Protection Authority, UCCE Marin, UCCE Sonoma, Permit Sonoma and Sonoma County Office of Resilience.
