Bring researchers into your classroom and give students a window into the process of scientific inquiry. Join us for an informal chat with scientists from Sonoma State University and Sonoma Water studying how climate change is affecting the Russian River Watershed. Come explore this fascinating topic through both an academic and applied lens while hearing about who these scientists are, how they got interested in watershed research, and their scientific goals and questions. We'll show clips of them out doing their work, followed by a chance to ask questions and discuss.
Leaders
- Anne Crealock, Environmental Specialist, Sonoma Water
- Mike Cohen, Professor of Biology, Sonoma State University
- Belle Ehrmantraut, Undergraduate Student Researcher, Department of Biology, Sonoma State University
This is a collaborative event supported by: Center for Environmental Inquiry, Sonoma State University; Orchard View School; Sonoma County Library - "Mind of a Scientist"; Sonoma Water
Details
"Live from the Field" events are 50-60 minute events where researchers at multiple sites describe their interests and research in 8-10 minute videos, then participants join a live moderated Q&A session with the researchers. Events are recorded for asynchronous instructional use, and available to all at thevirtualfield.org/virtual-visits/live-from-the-field
In this event, researchers will talk about their work on fire and controlled burns as they relate to water and climate change, and bioprospecting the Laguna de Santa Rosa watershed for applied biological systems that address climate change.
“Live from the Field” events originated as international collaborations led by the Center for Environmental Inquiry to give students virtual field experiences in ecosystems all over the world as part of "The Virtual Field." Learn more at TheVirtualField.org. Events are informal and open to everyone to generate opportunities to speak with researchers and develop a personal interest in doing research. All are welcome. Sonoma County Library's "Mind of a Scientist" is an opportunity for high school students -- and science lovers of all ages -- to experience a day in the life of a scientist. Each week, we venture out to meet scientists and engineers presenting live from their labs or the field, who will share the adventures they experience in their various professions and answer student questions. These fun and interesting webinar-style Zoom presentations are later uploaded at https://sonomalibrary.org/mind-of-a-scientist
