Mountain lions are the largest ranging terrestrial mammal in the western hemisphere, and commonly associated with pristine landscapes lacking human disturbance -- but this is not always the case. Though rarely seen, these charismatic mammals posses the ability to persist within urbanized landscapes. Join us to discover the North Bay’s apex predator and the many behavioral modifications necessary to survive amongst humans. Jake will take us on a deep dive into his graduate work involving analyzing mountain lion diet, habitat use, and energetics in California’s San Francisco North Bay, including at SSU's own Fairfield Osborn Preserve, noting ecological changes as human disturbance increases. Jake Harvey, graduate student at University of Nebraska, Benson Lab, and wildlife biologist with True Wild and the Institute for Wildlife Studies.
Originally form Pennsylvania, Jake graduated with a B.S in Fisheries & Wildlife Sciences from Paul Smith’s College before joining the Living with Lions project as a biologist in May 2021. Broadly, Jake is interested in carnivore behavior across human-dominated landscapes. As part of his graduate work, Jake seeks to assist in gaining a better understanding of mountain lion ecology to inform management decisions and educate the community to promote coexistence and long-term conservation of mountain lions, as well as their prey and habitats.
Logistics
No previous experience or knowledge is required. This event is recommended for ages 14 and up, and also serves as an educational lecture as part of the SSU Biology Department's weekly Colloquium series.
