Boiling Water in a Paper Cup
Abstract
Boiling water in a paper cup isn't as hard as it looks! If you held the cup at an appropriate distance from the flame, the water int he paper should have eventually boiled, preventing the cup from reaching burning point. The circular rim on the bottom may burn. if your paper cup had a waxy coating, the wax may melt off. the paper cup with sand will burn slightly. The Styrofoam cup will disintegrate. The demo covers phase change, chemical changes, and heat point barrier. Water boils at 100 degrees C, while paper doesn't burn until about 223 degrees C.
