Water and Land Use Planning Integration

Water and Land Use Planning Integration

Abstract

There is a recognized disconnect between land use planning and water resource planning in spite of the physical connection between the two resources. This disconnect is primarily a result of historical organizational structures and other administrative/mission barriers.

To help train future planners, there is a need to consider water resources while undertaking land use planning and, accordingly, for water resource planning to consider land use issues.

GEP 379 Land Use and Water Resources Planning facilitates the cross-training of future planners in water and land resources. The course exposes students to the history and practice of water resources management and comprehensive local government planning and the potential for their integration. Students conduct original research on city and county planning efforts and develop goals, policies, and implementation actions that integrate land use and water resources planning.
